Examples of what are not considered as defect:
Each item that you purchase from Myosutra is handled with utmost care and it isn’t our intention to provide you with defective items. However, We’d like to clarify what does not constitute as defect:
Further, we have elaborated on some of the most commonly found issues which cannot be considered defects.
Pin Marks
Handloom sarees are woven by pinning them to the loom. This often results in the appearance of pin marks or holes on top or bottom of saree or near borders, known as selvedge. Also, in the process of polishing the sarees, they are pinned in wooden posts. This is not considered a defect but rather an indication that the saree is an authentic handloom one.
The small black mark that is visible in this saree is really not a black mark. Since sarees are woven in handlooms, to keep track of whether the full length of the saree is woven, the artisans put a marker at an interval of 1 metre. Sometimes these marks are barely noticeable but sometimes they are a little more prominent as highlighted in the picture. These marks are usually near the edges of the saree which in no way is going to hamper the beauty of the piece.
The sarees are woven in handloom, thread by thread. Our artisans deftly use thousands of threads so that you get the finest quality. This is an example of just one thread not in the proper place. This isn’t a defect but rather shows this is woven by hand and not my machines.
On a closer look, you see what is known as “NaalPhore” in the handloom weaving term. When you aren’t weaving in a handloom, sometimes the silk thread may disintegrate in the reel. In that case, a “knot” is tied to keep the silk thread together to continue the weaving. What is seen in this picture is simply that knot and not a defect.
A handloom usually has a rough uneven surface which adds to its appeal. Knots, thread pulls are common in handwoven sarees. The picture depicts an example of a knot in the saree to tie two silk threads after it might have snapped. This is not considered a defect.
Tie dyes are nothing but the spread of the two or more colours which is used to hand dye or prepare the overall Bandhani look.
